Even though the combat may have a learning curve, it doesn’t take away from the fact that this game didn’t feel like anything I’ve played in recent years, the experience feels fresh and that is an achievement in itself. It works and makes for some really great moments. Although the formula is similar, this isn’t a bad thing whatsoever. Upgrading weapons to defend yourself from the shapeshifting Typhon and enhancing your ability to gain supernatural powers all sound a bit familiar, but it is done so in a very distinctive way. ![]() Its influences are very apparent, but even though it reminds you of Bioshock, it most definitely feels like its own game. Prey manages to capture immersion through its stunning atmosphere and unique combat. But that would surely give it disservice if I said it was as simple as that. Prey plays a lot like Bioshock and a bit of Dishonored. Even though the scenario may seem a bit familiar, the actual heart of the story will keep you guessing till the end. A space station being overrun by aliens is probably about the farthest you can get from originality, but Arkane Studios seemed to nail the unique tone quite well. Without giving away any spoilers, I am happy to report that the story felt very fresh considering the setting. ![]() I really enjoyed the fact that Arkane Studios chose to go this route, it really keeps you immersed in the world instead of having it broken by a three minute cutscene. Your mind is a clean slate so the story is told through various audio memos, emails, notes, and video files that can be found throughout the course of the game. “Who are you? Where are you? What are these things? How do I stop them?” these are all questions that you’ll be asking yourself in the beginning of your journey. Not to mention, you can’t remember anything thanks to the experimental procedures you were exposed to, so the entire setting is a complete mystery that slowly unravels itself as the game progresses. Jump to the year 2035 you play as Morgan Yu, a scientist trying to find out why these aliens (Typhons) have completely taken over the station. Thus creating Talos 1, the giant space station where the entire game takes place. Prey is out in 2017 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.In an alternate take on history, President Kennedy survives his assassination attempt and fuels more funding into the US space program. We also get our first look at the skill tree, and other RPG aspects of the game. One of the more interesting part of the demo is that it shows how enemies can turn into mundane objects in the environment to camouflage themselves. ![]() A lot of the combat in the video is mostly done using a wrench, and the Glue Cannon - a tool that can be used as a weapon, or to help you reach platforms higher up. Shooting your way through the station may not be possible due to how rare firearms are, but you can get access to a few weapons. The mission shown here sends them exploring different environments and using alien abilities to solve puzzles. Right off the bat, the developers confirm that you'll be able to go anywhere you want on Talos 1, the space station where Prey takes place. The video is nearly nine minutes-log, and features commentary from creative director Raphael Colantonio and lead designer Ricardo Bare. If last night's Game Awards trailer for Prey got you intrigued, wait until you see this new extended cut. ![]() The core mechanics of Prey and how the game actually plays are explored in this demo.
